The TMUA isn't a harder maths paper. It's a faster one.

Forty multiple-choice questions in two and a half hours, on content a student already knows. The score comes from route selection and pace, which is exactly why revising more content rarely moves it.

Why scores stall

Same question. Same student. Four minutes apart.

Twenty questions in 75 minutes gives you three minutes and forty-five seconds each. A method that works but takes six minutes is a wrong answer with extra steps. Here is what that looks like on one question.

Set the discriminant greater than zero, solve k² > 144, get k < −12 or k > 12, then start testing integer values one at a time to check the roots come out whole. Correct, thorough, and it has just cost the student two other questions.

Integer roots multiply to 36, so list the factor pairs of 36, add each pair for the possible values of k, discard the repeated-root case, and double for the negative pairs. The answer arrives from the structure of the question, not from the algebra it appears to be asking for.

The TMUA is run by UAT-UK, the joint organisation set up by Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge, and sat at Pearson VUE test centres.

Applications of mathematical knowledge

Twenty multiple-choice questions on standard mathematics used in unfamiliar contexts. The content sits inside GCSE Higher and AS-level. The difficulty is in the framing.

Mathematical reasoning

Twenty questions on logic and proof. This is the paper A-Level does not prepare anyone for, and the one where structured practice moves a score the most.

  • Spotting the flaw in a written proof
  • Proof by contradiction and counterexample
  • Negation and quantifiers

Scoring

Results come back as a single score from 1.0 to 9.0. There is no negative marking, so every question should be answered, including the ones a student never got to read properly. That sounds obvious and is routinely forgotten at minute 74.

Who uses it

Seven universities use the TMUA for 2027 entry: Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, LSE, Warwick, Durham and UCL. Oxford retired the MAT in January 2026, so Maths and Computer Science applicants there now sit this test as well. UCL requires it for Economics (L100 and L101). Warwick makes it compulsory for Computer Science and Mathematics but recommended for Economics and MORSE. Durham uses a 5.0 or above to cut the grade offer. Sheffield, Lancaster and Bath do not use it, whatever older guides say.

Required, recommended and merely accepted are three different things, and the lists move between cycles. Check the university's own course page for your year of entry rather than trusting any tutoring website, including this one.

Timing

The test is normally sat in October of Year 13, alongside the UCAS application. Cambridge applicants must take the October sitting. Registration closes well before the test date and schools sometimes miss it, so confirm the deadline with the exams officer early.

How we prepare students

Six to eight weeks, structured.

A year of unfocused past papers does less than two months of deliberate work. The order matters more than the volume.

Diagnose against the clock

One timed paper first, not to score it, but to find out whether the student is losing marks to accuracy, to route selection, or simply to never reaching the last five questions. Those need different fixes.

Build Paper 2 from nothing

Logic and proof are barely touched at A-Level, so most students start Paper 2 near zero. This is where the biggest gains sit, and it is teachable content rather than a talent test.

Drill route selection

For each question we ask what the fast route was before we ask whether the answer was right. Over a few weeks students stop reaching for the A-Level method by reflex.

Practise abandoning questions

Knowing when to leave one and move on is a skill, and it is worth more than any single topic. We practise it explicitly, because nobody does it well the first time under real pressure.

The summer between Year 12 and Year 13, aiming at the October sitting. Starting in September is still workable. Starting in the last fortnight is not, and we will say so rather than take the booking.

No. The content sits within GCSE Higher and AS-level maths. Further Maths students often start slightly faster on Paper 1, but Paper 2 is new territory for nearly everyone, which is where most of the score movement happens.

It depends on the course and the year, and published thresholds move between cycles. We will look at the specific courses on the UCAS list with you rather than quoting a number that may be a cycle out of date.
